(Chairman and founder)What is Pterygium?
Pterygium, also known as Surfer’s eye, is an abnormal growth that forms on the conjunctiva or the mucous membrane covering the sclera (white part of the eye). Typically originating from the nasal side of the conjunctiva, it is characterized by common scar tissue growths on the eye’s surface. Pterygium growth starts on the inner or outer white of the eye and extends onto the cornea towards the center, is usually non-cancerous.
They result from a degenerative and inflammatory response to environmental factors like sun exposure, wind, dust, and other foreign bodies. As Pterygium develops, it can lead to chronic redness, discomfort, and eventually vision impairment. In advanced cases, even after surgery, scar tissue may permanently affect vision.
